Cast: Vikram, Aishwarya Rajesh, Keerthy Suresh, Bobby Simha
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Direction: Hari
Saamy, Hari’s second film and one of the best masala films
ever made has its sequel after 14 years. Saamy2 (Saamy Square) is a proper
sequel with a continuing from where the first film left. This film opens with the story of first film,
replacing the Trisha, the lead of first film, by Aishwarya Rajesh (who does not
even fit to the role). I appreciate Hari for connecting the first part story to
second part story logically. Before I talk about what I dint like about Saamy2,
I would like to tell what worked for me.
Vikram as Aarusaamy and Ramasaamy is flawless, carrying the
whole film on his shoulders. I was convinced by the way he tries to justify the
dialogue “Naan saamy illa, bootham” (I am not Saamy, Ghost). Bobby Simha is
amazing as antagonist and another reason this passable film was entertaining.
But his name is Ravana Pichai and I was like why should one always name an
antagonist with names related to Raavana. Though the film had lot of issues,
the climax was really good and leave a little satisfaction.
Hari is one of the most successful commercial film director,
but he fails to update himself. If you look at his films before Singam, the
films would establish emotions beautifully before going into action. Post
Singam, he starts the film with only action, which makes us feel as if we are
watching separate action set pieces. SIngam was the transition film and now Saamy2
is the transition film. This film had a few emotional scenes, yet impactful. I
hope his next films are similar to his pre Singam films with many commercial updates.
I always relate Hari’s
films with AR Murugadoss films (Wait! Read further before criticizing me). His
films always has screenplay with high surprising scenes. The difference is Hari’s
will be small ideas and Murugadoss’ will be tech savvy and big ones. I enjoyed
Singam series because it had many high scenes, but Saamy2 has only one. Because
of which the cat and mouse game between Vikram and Bobby Simha falls flat and
it comes later in second half which becomes a problem.
I never wanted to compare the first part to this film. But I
couldn’t resist. There is a scene in this film where Vikram handles a caste
riot (in a blunt way) and I couldn’t stop thinking of the amazing scene in the
first part. And see how the comedy is used to talk about caste discrimination
in the first part. Here the caste discrimination dialogues are said by hero and
its force fit. And Soori’s comedy makes you frown. The songs and background
score is equally worse. Only music that was good was the theme music of first
part.
Verdict: A brainless commercial, could have been awesome
with better writing and direction.
