Cast: Prabhu Deva, Sananth Reddy, Indhuja
Music: Santhosh Narayanan
Direction: Karthik Subbaraj
Karthik Subburaj’s Mercury starts
unwrapping from the title card with animations and newspaper headlines about
the tragedy of mercury poisoning. Karthik puts out things at first, which we will
later come back to it in the film. We see five friends (hearing and speech
impaired due to mercury poisoning) who are enjoying their togetherness with
loud music which annoys their servant in the house. I felt this as an analogy
to how Prabhu Deva gets annoyed by sound in later half.
Karthik Subburaj’s writing is fantastic.
The emotional story with mercury poisoning and it’s victims as backdrop is
amazing. I really loved the way he gave importance to small items like iPod, a
stop watch. The direction is brilliant with scenes bringing everyone to edge of
the seat. One of my favourite scenes is when one character sees a broken egg in
the nest and later we see a small chick limping with chemicals on its body.
Prabhu Deva’s casting is masterstroke. He
is brilliant in the climax. The other characters too are amazing. When these
five characters get into trouble, their reactions makes us shiver with them. The
art department makes the factory more realistic. Along with Karthik and art
department, the cinematographer and music director.
Thiru (Cinematographer) brings out the horror
with his angles. The scene where everyone are watching laptop, the camera moves
to and fro between the walls and we see different activities of them. That’s brilliant
editing by Vivek Harshan. I could just pick numerous beautiful shots in this
film. The green colour tone used inside the factory gives shrills.
Along with marvellous cinematography,
Santhosh’s background score just elevates the mood of the film. The background
score makes this non horror film a horror type film. The first half of the film
is entertaining for sure, but the lack of story makes it feel bland during the interval.
Anyways the second half catches up and you come out content. Look for the
wordings on car window in the end. I really loved it.
Verdict: Yet another brilliantly written
and directed film by Karthik Subburaj.
