Kaatru
veliyidai is a love story between a fighter pilot Varun (player by Karthi) and
a doctor Leela (played by Aditi). Varun is self-centered while Leela is the
opposite. Karthi has a great change over, looking exquisite. His charater has a
great acting scope, so do Aditi's character. When it's Mani Ratnam's film,
close up shots are mandatory. Their performance in such shots are brilliant.
When
the story happens in Srinagar, Mani and Ravi Varman takes you a journey through
the snow covered place. Ravi Varman's camera has beautifully captured the the
love. The scene where the two sit inside the jeep with it's wiper wiping of the
snow revealing the two is top notch. Mani ratnam films and mirror scenes have a
great romance and its followed in this film too. The aerial shots at wonderful
locations are jaw dropping.
A
R Rahman and Mani Ratnam, a duo that have given mesmerizing songs for 25 years
have not failed to surprise us. Songs are not just used in the film, as in
Aditi's introduction has Vaan song with slightly different lyrics and Nallai
Allai song is just vocals with breeze in the background. Background score of a
soothing flute in a scene where the lead talk near Himalayas or rustic music
for Karthi's action scenes makes the film lively. The edit cuts is also to the
mood of the film without any jump cuts.
The
problem of Kaatru Veliyidai can be easily related to Karthi's character in the
film. It's self-centered towards the two people. Take Aalaipayuthe or Oh Kadhal
kanmani, there have been sub plots that revolve around the main story. Kaatru
veliyidai lacks those sub plots and wasted many potential actors like Delhi
Ganesh. All these makes it too poetic and scenes become mundane. A few scenes
reminds the director's previous films making the scenes less exciting.
Verdict:
Excessive love. Worth watch for it's visuals and music.
