Pa Pandi Review

Cast:           Rajkiran, Revathy, Prasanna, Madonna Sebastian
Direction:   Dhanush
Music:         Sean Roldan

Pa Pandi, the multi-talented Dhanush’s directional debut. Its surprising that Dhanush could write a new  refreshing script. A 60 year old Pandi (popularly called as Power Pandi played by Rajkiran) takes his bike in search of his first love. Pa Pandi is probably the first film where Rajkiran acts in urban based film and this one reason for this film to be refreshing. The film starts with Pandi’s relationship with his son. Though some scenes are staged artificially (Where Pandi does not get a auto despite of standing in a main road) they are able to connect with audience.

Pandi is a popular stunt master in film industry and to get rid of boredom in his retired days, he works in a gym. After a certain problem the gym manager scolds Pandi “Satharana cinema fight master thana nee, unaku enna gym training pathi theriyum?” (You are just a ordinary fight master, what you will know about gym training?). Pandi replies every job is equal. This statement is proved in the subsequent scenes where he terribly fails to deliver a small dialogue in a film but perform a stunt sequence in a single take. Such scenes are delight to watch.

When someone like Rajkiran who is known for his rustic stunts, the stunt sequence in the film could have to choreographed properly. His potential was wasted. Anyone can easily notice that ropes are used in the stunts losing the authenticity. The same applies for casting of Madonna Sebastian. She was not right for the part, nothing more to be said. The flashback portions starts by Pandi telling “It’s a usual old love story”. But that cannot justify a redundant boring half an hour. But Dhanush is clever enough to follow the boring scenes with a romance of two 60 year old people, which is new in Tamil movies.  Sean Roldan’s songs and background music is backbone for the film.

Verdict: A refreshing film.

Mayaanadhi Review

Cast: Tovino Thomas, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Illavarasu Year: 2017 Music: Rex Vijayan Direction: Aashiq Abu It took me hours to come out this film. Mayaanadhi is a type of film that traps you into its world and leaves you enthralled. In the opening sequence we hear Maathan (Tovino Thomas) taking about his future and we see sky as the visual. The future is vast and so far away like the sky. Mayaanadhi is a romantic thriller. The romance of Maathan and Aparna (Aishwarya Lekshmi) is just amazing and used wonderfully to the crime part of the film. Tovino as Maathan not only looks good but also his acting is brilliant. His small facial expressions like getting frustrated for a phone call or while motivating Aparna over call adds value to the character. Aishwarya Lekshmi as Aparna Ravi is also brilliant on screen. I loved the scene where she slaps Maathan, walks away fast, and then gradually slows down till she stops. One of the biggest things that Malayalam cinema doe...

Arjun Reddy Review

Cast: Vijay Deverakonda, Shalini, Rahul Ramakrishna, Music: Radhan Direction: Sandeep Vanga When the film gets over and while you walk out of the theatre have you heard a few people saying “It’s a normal same old story” (No one did for this film). Arjun Reddy is such a film with same old story. Arjun Reddy (played by Vijay Deverakonda, about whom I will talk in a while) is a topper in his medical college and a short tempered guy with zero anger management. He meets a first year girl, Preethi (played by Shalini) and they fall in love. What happens to Arjun after his love failure is what explored in a unique way. So this not a film that you can expect every year. This is a film that has a beautiful narration enthralling you for 3 hours. The initial scenes when Arjun frequently visits Preethi are a little surprising as Preethi never utters a word whenever he visits her. You start thinking what kind of love it is. But the love that Arjun has on Preethi is explained in...

Aramm Review

Cast: Nayanthara, Ramesh, Vignesh Music: Ghibran Direction: Gopi Nainar I don’t know whether director wrote the district collector character to be women or changed it when Nayanthara was on board. Whatever it maybe, the female IAS officer has added the movie more authenticity. The decisions which Madhivadani (Nayanthara) takes towards the end of the film are emotional ones which we can’t see in a hero-centric films. We are used to hero diving into the situation, however tough it is, and completing the mission. The film is about the rescue mission of a small girl, Thanshika, who falls down inside an unclosed borewell hole. This is not that one day or one incident (like Gautham Menon’s hero tells) of Madhivadani, rather the issue is given more importance. So the most we know about Madhivadani is her name. The news channel debate that fills in the gap between two scenes is little annoying as it stresses the same point that of people of the village. The people o...
