Irumbuthirai is translated as ‘Iron Curtain’. I was
expecting it to be an analogy to something, but it was a direct meaning. Except
this the whole film had satisfied my expectations. Irumbuthirai was like a
small portion of cyber war. The way the characters are established followed by
setting the main plot and finally the face off shows the clarity of PS Mithran.
The film has only a few main characters and there is casting is perfect.
My pick of the lot is definitely Arjun (plays Sathyamurthy
aka White Devil). Arjun, who is fondly called as ‘Action King’ gets only one
fight and he is the person who prefers intelligence over physical fight. In his
limited screen time, he pulled off his character amazingly. The first half
revolves around Kathiravan (Vishal) but also beefs up the character of White
devil and Arjun sweeps off your feet since the interval.
Kathiravan, a military officer, who is desperate of marrying
a foreign girl and move to her country. He is doing this because he hates the
scenarios in India. He has anger management issues and ordered to consult a
psychiatrist for six weeks. Vishal’s physic is tailor made for such role and
his acting has also bought this character to life.
Kathiravan meets the psychiatrist Rathi Devi (Samantha) and
his perception of life changes (Am not talking about cheesy love story). This
is when director sets his plot backing with strong emotions. Delhi Ganesh who
plays Kathiravan’s father and Darshana as his sister are excellent in their roles
and bring the emotions beautifully.
Robo Shankar plays as Kathiravan’s uncle and his comedy is a
part of the scene. In the same way there are many questions, messages relating
to current scenario in real world and those dialogues too never seem like force
fitted. As said earlier the clarity of the director has made this film a fine
thriller.
After the movie, I felt that Vishal’s character was not as
intelligent as Arjun’s, but still out smarts him. Anyways this does not take
away the fact the film’s fineness.
Verdict: A wonderful movie based on cyber war.
